Escuela ad astra is a private elementary school, located just a few minutes’ walk from beautiful beaches in Sámara, a lovely small town on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Instead of the noise of cars, the children hear the sounds of the nearby jungle as they playfully learn the academic basics. Immersed in the Spanish language, they adapt and pick it up quickly.
Our educational concept combines playful learning in small classes with immersive language learning for children aged 6 to 12, in an engaging and effective learning environment.
Small classes
Drawing inspiration from Waldorf schools, our teaching methodology for our private elementary school emphasizes learning through play and active participation in small, mixed-age classes.
The latest scientific research and our experiences outside traditional school settings have clearly shown: this approach, combined with skilled teachers and individualized instruction, leads to the most effective learning outcomes.
Knowledge acquisition & learning strategies
While playful in nature, our private elemenntary school is also geared towards academic goals.
Cognitive and emotional intelligence is fostered in conjunction with physical activity, which can increase in-depth knowledge acquisition.
The curriculum is mainly based on the rather successful school system of Switzerland. It has been adapted to the needs of Costa Rica, like the focus on Spanish and English.
Immersive language learning
This form of language learning replaces direct language teaching, which is not very efficient for children.
Topics are playfully introduced with the help of audio-visual aids, while the subsequent consolidation and repetition occurs entirely in the foreign language.
The actual (Spanish) language acquisition occurs imperceptibly.
Language of instruction
While the primary language of instruction is Spanish, we also emphasize the use of English in math, science and language training.
To promote the use of languages, the cross-thematic lessons also focus on oral and written narrative skills, communication, and the promotion of critical thinking.
We also offer French and German as an optional extension to the regular curriculum for certain students.
Target audience
Our private elementary school caters to children aged 6 to 12 years, corresponding to grades 1 to 6.
Our approach focuses on addressing the unique needs and abilities of each child. They receive an education tailored to their individual level of knowledge, regardless of their age or grade.
Although we do not use traditional grading systems in our elementary school, we adhere to the recommended curriculum for each child.

Location
The school is located towards the Buenavista beach, a couple of minutes outside the center of Sámara, in a very safe and tranquil neighborhood.
With an indoor as well as two outdoor school areas there is plenty of room to spread out if needed.
A large playground with trampoline invites to release energy and make friends during playtime and breaks.
